UX Research and Strategy for an App to Help Stage Actors Find Relevant Auditions
Problem Statement
Community theater actors have a hard time finding auditions. At the same time, casting directors at community theaters have a hard time finding new talent. My goal for this platform is to bridge the gap and help new talent enter the community theater scene.
Discovery
Having spent 15 years as an actor, director, and producer for stage productions. I was very familiar with the range of frustrations facing actors. In order to balance out my personal perspective, I spoke to a range of actors: Both those trying to break into the industry, as well as the “old hands” who’ve been doing it for a while.
Crafting Personas
Based on my user interviews, I crafted three user personas with two main goals in mind.
Make sure the app matches the user’s goals and frustrations.
Make sure I don’t overcomplicate the interface as older actors aren’t always tech savvy.
Storyboarding and User Flows
Based on the user personas I started crafting the user flow. I showed this to a group of actors and ended up adding number 4 based on their feedback.
Wireframing
Thewireframeswere crafted with an emphasis on making the navigation very intuitive. I used Airbnb as inspiration for how to lay out the interface. I also made sure that the flow for signing up for an audition would be straightforward.
Prototype
You can use this prototype to set an audition for the Pirates of Penzance on December 11 at 19:30.
Next Steps:
Corona has put this project on hold. Once live productions are happening again, I will run some moderated usability tests to make sure that our target users understand the interface. After which, the visual designer will work on designing the layout, colors, and typography.
Moving forward, I will add new features such as the ability to invite friends, upload video auditions, filter auditions, and take audition masterclasses.
